You’ve probably heard about the popular Keto diet. It’s been a popular one among celebrities, so it’s received a lot of attention. Many people who try the diet do lose a lot of weight, so you may be eager to give this diet a try. However, before you get started with this diet, it’s a good idea to learn more about ketosis, how the keto diet works, and what it takes to successfully lose weight with the keto diet.

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is one of the body’s processes that is done each day, and it works to adapt to what’s put in it, turning various nutrients into fuels used by the body. Your body can process carbs, fats, and proteins for use. When you eat a very low carb diet, this process is ramped up, resulting in a chemical reaction that’s both safe and normal.

If you eat excess protein or carbohydrate based foods, the body breaks them down into glucose. It does this so it can create ATP, a type of energy molecule that fuels the body for daily maintenance and activities. The body uses up quite a few calories each day to support normal processes, so many of the nutrients you take in are used just to maintain your body each day. If you’re eating more than the body needs, then there may be extra glucose that’s not needed by the body. Two things can happen to extra glucose:

  • Glycogenesis – Extra glucose can be turned into glycogen and stored in the muscles and liver.
  • Lipogenesis – If the liver and muscles already have enough glycogen, then glucose is turned into fat and then store.

When the body doesn’t have any more glycogen or glucose, ketosis occurs. When there’s no more glycogen or glucose to use for energy, your body has to burn fat and creates a type of molecule known as ketones. The body breaks down fats, which creates glycerol and fatty acids, and they are burned in the liver by a process known as beta-oxidation. This process results in the creation of ketones, which the brain and muscles can use as fuel.

When the body is in ketosis, many studies show that the brain and body actually run more efficiently on ketones than they do on glucose. The state of ketosis makes your brain want the ketones over glucose, so your body isn’t breaking down protein for energy. The body is forced to begin using fat reserves for energy, which is why low-carb diets provide such great weight loss results.

What’s the Keto Diet?

The ketogenic diet, often just called the keto diet, is a diet that requires that carbs make up 10% or less of your calories. Protein will make up 10-15% of calories, and between 60-80% of your total calories should come from fat. While it may sound a lot like Atkins, keto diets usually restrict carbs even more and also keep protein intake lower.

On the keto diet you’ll be able to eat seafood, poultry, and meat. You can also have cream, butter, eggs, and cheeses. Avocados, seeds, nuts, and low-carb veggies like onions, greens, peppers, and tomatoes are allowed in limited amounts. Going for good fats like dairy and extra-virgin olive oil offers the best results.

You’ll need to avoid eating starches, pastas, breads, and grains, and sugar in any form is not allowed. Starchy veggies, processed foods, legumes, most fruits, and alcohol should not be eaten on the diet.

How Does the Keto Diet Work?

The whole goal of the keto diet is to put your body in a state of ketosis, where your body is burning off fat for fuel, since there’s no glucose or glycogen available in your body. It can take a couple of weeks for your body to shift into the ketogenic state. Not only will your body begin burning more fat on the keto diet, all the fats you’re eating will keep you feeling full, which can boost weight loss efforts even more. Most people find that they don’t have food cravings and they enjoy more energy.

Studies have shown that the keto diet improves insulin resistance in individuals who already have diabetes, and it helps lower blood sugar levels as well. Some research even suggests that following this diet may help treat some cancers, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease.
